It's mind blowing to take a look back over the the development of Adobe's Massive hit, Photoshop.
Widely regarded and accepted as the most professional, elaborate and most powerful photo and graphics creation and editing suite the world has to offer, Adobe hasn't pulled photoshop out of a hat, It's been 20 YEARS in development!
Photoshop was originally a Macintosh program when it was released in 1988 by a family duo, John and Thomas Knoll.
When Adobe used their powers that be, to publish the software to the world two years later, It's full "extended" edition fitted on ONE Floppy diskette! That's 1.44MB! Putting that into perspective the software now takes up over 1500MB in some installations!
The software's development has been smooth and steady over the years with CS4 on the horizon very soon.
In 1992, Some 2 years after adobe published the software, it was made compatible with the windows operating system predicting Microsoft's success in the operating system world.

Fundamental features such as multiple layers were programmed into the software in photo shop 3 in '94, Along with major user interface improvements.

Undo history in version 5, in the year 1998 and support for the RAW file format was introduced only as recent as 2002, that was the then hugely popular photoshop 7.0.

As we reach mid 2005, Adobe introduced some of the features that make photoshop the massively powerful program it is. I'm referring to features like the healing brush tool, Clone stamp tool and smart objects, not forgetting the pub photo favorite, the red eye remover.

May 07 brought us the most widely used photoshop professionally, Adobe Photoshop CS3. This housed the biggest change list of all the previous version releases adobe published. Adobe CS3 created most if not all of the graphics on this forum as well as most of the modern graphics in use on websites today.
I'll look back on this and maybe update it with the release of CS4, I hope you've enjoyed taking a trip back in time following the advancements of Adobe Photoshop.
CS4
Now, In the second half of 2008, Adobe released Photoshop CS4.
Some major ground breaking new features can be expected but the shear amount of new technology incorporated into CS4 makes it a worth while upgrade.
If your running up to the minute hardware, CS4 is even more of a worthwhile upgrade.
New features such as a 64-bit version as well as the nearly legacy x86 for users without 64-bit CPUs. The 64-bit version of the photoshop.exe takes full advantage of the x64 architecture, increased speed and higher memory addressing.
The most important feature for me is the way CS4 now uses the power of the GPU (graphics processing unit) to render the images and do the majority of the image processing during the application of effects and 3D rendering. A GPU's abilities to out perform CPUs tenfold in image processing makes this new feature one of the biggest attractions to CS4.
The interface has also changed. Some are disappointed by it, saying it looks "windows 2000-ish" while others disagree, stating it is easier to work with for many hours than the previous versions.
One last new feature I'm going to mention is the new "Content-aware scaling" which is accessible via clicking the Edit menu or Alt+Shift+CTRL+C.
with an image such as the below image, "Content-aware scaling" makes it possible to stretch the scenery in the background, while keeping important things in the foreground, Such as wheels round, People the same width etc...

Using "Content-aware scaling" to stretch the width of this image, Would result in the building in the background to widen while keeping the pea shaped vehicle and it's wheels, round.
