Python is a high level programming language geared towards code readability.
Google use python as do Youtube, it is used for a number of 3d animation programs like blender but not really used for MMORPG games too much.
C++ would be a better choice for game making i'd think but ThRaInPa would be in a better position to comment on that.

i-CONICA is right, Python is a high-tier programming language created with both ease-of-use and easy readability.
It IS true that is it possible to create a 2D (and possibly in some cases 3D) games in python, online or not.
All in all python is not recomended, C++ (being as versatile as it is) is a good choice, or you could go for a mix of C# and another one someone might like.
Fanatic beginners who really want to jump into game creation can take a good look at DarkBASIC, which is available here. http://darkbasic.thegamecreators.com/

But if you just want to learn to program, Python is a good start since it is rather simplistic.
