Memory upgrade on a Gateway laptop MT6728

I recently purchase two 2 Gig cards to replace the 1 Gig cards in a gateway MT6728 laptop.
I tried the 1st set and it started to boot windows vista once and once only and then locked up.
After that I could not get past the bios bootup
I was never able to get to window vista booting.
I ordered another set of 2 gig memory chips and it does the same thing.
I can not get past the BIOS boot up.The 2nd set never made one attempt past the BIOS.
I did use PC5300 memory chips.
What could I do to get 4 gig on this laptop gateway MT6728?

Your laptops X86 processor indicates your using the X86 version (32bit) of Windows Vista.
This will not support 4GB of memory. 4GB is the theoretical maximum yet you won't see any more than 3GB.
There is a explanation as to why, here.
Some systems simply report less, while others, crash.

Does the system get past BIOS with only one of the two new sticks installed?
If so, do that, open BIOS and check the memory timings and voltages the laptop is currently running match that of the specification of the memory.

If the system boots into windows with just the one stick installed, do so, open command prompt with admin privileges (search command prompt in the start menu and right click > start as admin.)
In the cmd window try typing this then hitting enter. bcdedit /set pae forceenable
This enabled Physical Address Extension which "pseudo" increases your 32-bit installation to 36-bit. Making it support 4GB in some cases.

Sometimes this is solvable with a BIOS update, but more likely is the Vista 32bit installation. You may find a X64 installation would run fine with your memory.

Let us know how you get on.
And welcome ;)

Thanks for the response. I had tunnel vision as I thought I could not mix memory modules.
I had tried to install (2) two gig memory modules which would not let me get to the boot disc.
I tried just (1) 2 gig memory module and it worked fine. Then I tried to add (1) of the older 1 gig
memory modules and surprised it also works fine. I now have 3 gig or what appears to be working memory.
I ran the x86 mem test for many hours it did over 10 passes with no errors.
Thanks.
