hey guys, i bought a new mouse for my laptop cos i hate using the little pad thingy, it won't fit in the laptop anywhere though, have i bought the wrong one? what do i have to ask for when i take it back?

What kind of input is it? Because you could get something to plug into your laptop with the right input then plug your mouse into it.

Which laptop do you have? I'll get a datasheet and see which ports it has..
Also, what does the plug on the mouse look like? If it's a round green one with lots of pins it's PS/2 if it's a slim rectangle one, then it's the more modern USB.

That laptop doesn't have PS/2 from what i can find.. That would explain your problem, Also explains why it looks like it would fit into one but doesn't. That's the S-Video output... Not PS/2. They're similar to look at. but not the same.
Your mouse will have to plug into a USB slot. You can either swap your mouse for a USB version or get a converter. A nice USB Wireless mouse would be nice though..
