Building a Custom Mac Box

So. I'm an avid mac user. Love my iMac G4. It was the first computer I bought. And if it wasn't for the change to the intel chip set, I probably would only be consider purchasing an external hard drive to supplement my meek 80gig internal. Nothing outrageous, just a terabyte. (To think I remember when single digit gigs we're 'HOLLY SHIT MAN').

I am also broke. I can't afford the prices for the realz mac boxes.

So I was thinking I should be able to build my own computer. I have some intrepidation. I've never done it. I am also worried from what I read that 10.5 OSX may not have the supplement drives to support the wide variety in the market place.

Advice?

Building your own PC is awesome. Real fun.
It's got pros and cons though... Building your own PC gives you the option to spend more where you need it, unless off the shelf PCs which have been designed to be an all rounder, in terms of performance. Usually with poor graphics, this being the most expensive part.

One of the cons of building your own PC is financial, because it's usually not cheaper than buying one ready made. You have to buy the components individually where a manufacture can buy in bulk at wholesale prices.

I'm not sure I follow what you mean about the Intel chipset stopping you having a new internal hard drive? Your old PowerPC G4 shouldn't cause a problem with a new hard drive?...

Google "hackintosh" for some REALLY good guides on installing OSX on PC hardware. As far as i know, leopard doesn't need any command line hacks or disk fiddling to make it work... Should just install, but not 100%. A hackintosh guide'll give more of an insight.

If/when it comes to choosing your hardware if your going to do a new build, run the list past us before shelling out..  :)

The issue is that the new software is starting to be Intel only. I first notice this when I was newgrounds, and some posted a slick flash converted Doom. The original. And it was was flash 10? the latest version. And its only Intel.

Which means that I'll get slimmer pickings, and that is coming sooner then later.

That why I'm switching over.

As for the price. With how Apple prices there computer, it'll be cheaper or come to just about the same to build it.

But yea, thanks for keyword.

Okay so it looks like I need to be careful with the mother board, as to make sure there a patch for it. Suppose I'll just use this thread as a mini blog on my attempts to build one.

Core2Quad then. I have slim hopes of playing Spore and Fallout3. I don't care care if they're at max setting but playable would be nice. OH and Star Craft 2. >.> Have to for SC2. Blizzard got me into computer gaming. The first time I was dehydrated was playing WarCraft 2: TIDES OF DARKNESS!

Little off topic, about the gaming I suppose but who cares? lol. I've never been into RPGs... Warcraft couldn't interest me less tbh.. I've always liked modern, cutting edge shooters.. Crysis, Far Cry, Bioshock, Timeshift, unreal tournament, Halo, S.W.A.T 4, COD, BIA, etc... lol I dabble in the odd racing game too...

Back to the mac progress. I'd check those hackintosh guides on how well OSX will work on 4 cores. I'm no mac expert, while windows will use as many cores as you can throw at it, I've no idea about mac in that respect...

Snow Leopard, 10.6 Is suppose to have good capability of the multicore processing. 10.4 doesn't. As it didn't need to. 10.5 can, but its not optimized for it. In this instance the Mac OS is playing catch up, but they aren't slouching on it.

And off topic: Warcraft is traditionally a Real time Strat. game. One of the first. Warcraft 2, was the first RTS that got it right. One of those genre defining games. Much how Max Payne defiend bullet time for video games, and halo defined console FPS.

WC3 is an odd RTS with RPG elements. I overall liked it. World of Warcraft, (Haven't played it.), appernetly took the borning out of the MMO.

For me, there just muds with picture. Not to much role playing. A favorite pastime of mine.

Great game. I had friends who for fun beat it without ever getting shot without using its bullet time.

without ever getting shot

(think) With or without bullet time I find it very hard to believe throughout the entire game he never got shot once... (paranoid)
