Title: Laptop battery that will last 30 yrs on ONE CHARGE
Post by: i-CONICA on January 23, 2008, 06:23:31 AM
Your next laptop could have a continuous power battery that lasts for 30 years without a single recharge thanks to work being funded by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory. The breakthrough betavoltaic power cells are constructed from semiconductors and use radioisotopes as the energy source. As the radioactive material decays it emits beta particles that transform into electric power capable of fueling an electrical device like a laptop for years.

Although betavoltaic batteries sound Nuclear they

I posted this a while ago, I'm amazed no-one has commented on this...   ??)

I think a battery that is installed in a laptop when you buy it, Never ever runs out of power and will last an average of 30 YEARS!!! On it's one and only factory charge is staggering!

Obviously this technology will be in mobile phones which never need charging, In safety devices like smoke alarms,
Ambulance equipment etc...

Amazing.. Even if it is a few years away...

The cost...LOL. I bet it would be perfect though. Id love to see a portable gaming device to be able to charge and run for 30 years WOW
And adding to the fact that todays smoke alarms run for approx 3-4 years without charge.

The almost scary point of this is that we'll buy items and not even think about their power requirements.
They'll work out of the box and continue to work up until they fail due to hardware failures in the future.

The initial predictions of 2010 I think were a little hasty, I think more 2015 or even 2020 would be more likely...

Hopefully I'll still be here then and be able to enjoy taking powered portable devices for granted!

then they should do that with house-hold electricity

hm...They will have to wait for technology to catch up first.. And to update everything with this, will take just as long as making all of it...

The cost in making a battery big enough to power a house for 30 years using the above technology would be in the millions. Not economical. Small things like laptops, mobile phones and watches are great applications for it.
