Photoshop Challenge #1

Each day, week, month whenever... I'm going to set challenges for forum users.

I'll either specify what they need to create, Or upload/link an image they need to do their best work with.

This first one I'll keep simple...
The flower is black & white, it's been desaturated. I don't have the original coloured image, I downloaded the image as it is.

The challenge is to recolour the image to the best of your abilities.
The image is 3207x2592px, You can scale the finished result down if you like, But maintain it's aspect ratio.

There's no deadline, Just upload your result (preferably with a psd also) when your done.

Enjoy!

Welcome.

Nice work!
Your leaves aren't as good as mine I think, but your flower is better... It should actually be white, as it's a magnolia... They're white.. Mine didn't look right left uncoloured, What did you do to the flower because it doesn't look the same as the original desaturated image?

For the flower I added a layer of white and set the mode to soft light. I fiddled with the opacity until it felt right. The white was actually and off-white, more like a minor tint of cream.

I admit the leaves are a bit off in terms of colour and I haven't kept the edges perfect. I think the problem with your image is the contrast between the leaves and flowers. Although the leaves are a lot nicer looking, it actually distracts from the focus of the image, this being the flower.

By using duller colours for the leaves and bringing the flower out with the brightness I have drawn the eye to the flower more smoothly.

I also use another trick in photoshop. Go to image - mode - 32 bit and then switch back to either 16 or 8 bit. This will open up a HDR conversion box. Switch to local adaption and adjust the curves. (This will allow you to adjust colours, contrast and brightness but with much more flexability than the contrast option in the image - adjustments menu.

I also used unsharp mask after flattening all the layers and using Amount:75, Radius:25 and leave the threshold at 0.

I edited your image using the techniques I talked about before. Here is the result. Hope you don't mind me stealing your image as a colour template. To get better results, do the edits on the desaturated image then colour it.
